Harmonic Landing

Harmonic Landing by Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger (O+A) transforms the sounds of traffic and trains into harmony in real-time. Formerly known as Harmonic Bridge, this sound art installation was originally commissioned by MASSMoCA. Following its 28-year exhibition there, the artists gifted it to Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

It can be found at the south end of the Croton Landing walkway. Feel free to sit on the Cube Loudspeaker for a special listening experience. It will officially open this fall. In the meantime please be patient whilt the grass grows in.

O+A would like to thank the Croton on Hudson Department of Public Works for the huge support they gave to the project, and the great work they did. This addition to Croton Landing public space would not have been possible without them.

O+A’s installation manager Bill Ballou (L) works with Dominic, Scott and Mike and the 200 pound plus cement “Cube Loudspeaker in preparation for the lift.

The DPW has the right tools and skills for the job.

Landing has to be a perfect fit for the Cube speaker to be secure and waterproof.

1998-2026, Harmonic Bridge @ Mass Moca

Before its donation to the Croton Community, HARMONIC LANDING, had a long life at MASSMoCA, a major modern art museum in North Adams MA. It was installed underneath the Highway2 overpass which separated the downtown from the museum campus. Traffic noise from the overhead bridge was transformed into harmony in real-time by two 16 foot “Tuning Tubes” mounted on the bridge.

But the bridge is coming down soon, and the museum returned the installation to the artists. Here is a video of the installation after 10 years at MASSMoCA
